2015 Gint-A-Cuffs!!! Box Topper + Pack 1

Off we go!

Our box topper was that of super-star Mike Trout.  I'm not overly thrilled with it, but hey, it gets me a good chunk of points!  I'll take it!

#252 Mike Trout +8 Oversized Reprints Box Loader (+10 if player from FP list)

On to the first pack!

#210 Starling Marte

#181 Drew Hutchison

#44 Sal Vulcano - this is officially the first non-sport card I pulled from this box.  I had 5 entrants into my Ginter contest #2 and none of those individuals guessed this card.  I vote that this card stinks however, so we're going to go 1 more non-baseball card deeper and see if we have a winner there.  If not, oh well.

Regular back MINI - #144 Brandon Belt +3 FP

Woo! First points!

SP-84 Yadier Molina +2 Starting Points, +2 FP

Off to a great start with a 4 point insert.

#323 Joaquin Benoit

#244 Jason Kipnis +2 FP

#17 Yadier Molina +2 FP

4 FP in one pack (plus a 5th from the box topper) seems incredibly lucky.  Granted, one of them showed up twice, but I'm not complaining!

Pack total: 11 points
Running total: 29 points

I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer for our second non-baseball card.  Here's a rundown of what people guessed in case somebody's interested.

Dawgbones - Rocky Balboa
Jerold Irabagon - Philae Probe - COMET LANDER
John Hazan - Buster Olney
Nachos Grande - Keith Law
RAZ - Joe Buck

Case Review Part 4: What one does to a baseball when one has a bat

Hopefully you were a good enough player in little league that the title of this post didn't make you think 'miss'.  I suppose, even if you did think that you wouldn't be too far offline.  The vast majority of my case value was on previous posts.  You will find no such Bryant's, Trout's, or extra case hits here.  You will find some fun things though, and that's why I keep coming back to Ginter!  No matter the value, I always have fun ripping it and seeing interesting things pop out.

This year Allen & Ginter again featured 3 different relic styles.  The first is extremely boring and straightforward, pretty much no different than last year's full-sized relics.  I pulled a bunch of non-sport guys that I've never heard of (plus a dupe of one Malcolm Gladwell).

Each box seemed to have exactly one of this type, and one of the other type of full-sized relic.  The third hit was your "big" hit (either an auto, framed relic, rip card, ect.).  The "type B" design of the full-sized relic pulled from the 10th anniversary theme of the product this year and featured a cut-out 10.  Not that a cut-out 10 is any different than a cut-out square, but the second version of these relics look so much better than the first.  I think a lot of that has to do with the landscape oriented format of these.

Perhaps it just the cards I pulled, because I didn't bother looking at the checklist for these, but the relic subjects for type B also seemed to be heads and shoulders above the others.  If you remove the single Puig relic, I'm pretty sure I like every single one of the 10th anniversary relics better than any of the normal square ones.

By far my two favorite of this group are the two with the most interesting materials.  The Lakey Peterson relic is almost certainly a wet-suit as its super thin and is even a bit stretchy to the touch.  The other interesting one is the Craig Kimbrel piece.  I simply can't tell what the heck that material is supposed to be.  It isn't really the color of anything Braves or Padres.  I can only assume it's a sock or undershirt... very strange.

The third type of relic is your expected framed mini relic.  Normally, I'm pretty much just as "meh" about these as I am with the full-sized relics.  I don't really buy this product for its hits so I tend to just ignore them, and either sell them or slowly trade them away for stuff I actually want.  Even when I pull an autograph, I tend to look at it, note the subject, and quickly put it off to the side.  This year, however, when I pulled my first framed relic (that of Yasiel Puig), I actually stopped and stared at the card for quite some time admiring it.

Until very recently I thought the purple frame was what was doing so much for me with these relics.  I've always enjoyed the color purple and I thought these frames in general were very simple and extremely well done.  However, I think there's even a better reason and it's something that Night Owl very recently alluded to in his Ginter post regarding the base cards.  I'm ashamed to say that I've mostly just glanced over the base cards this year and haven't really taken the opportunity to really look at them and see what Topps was up to this year.

Instead of babbling about what I should be doing, let me show you what I'm talking about.

Next to each other the difference between the two styles is immediately apparent.  I can barely tickle Ryan Howard, and David Ortiz (aside from him batting righty because I flipped the picture around...oops!) is about ready to smack me in the face!  Night Owl mentioned that he didn't like the new closely cropped look all that much for the base cards.  I have no idea what I think about it yet... again, I haven't really gotten around to looking at them.  However, I know I love it for these framed mini relics.  In fact, I love this new look so much on these cards that I'm going to attempt to collect the entire set of them.  Off to the races!

I pulled autographs too!  Here!  Have a couple!

Yawn....

Talk about looking at the auto subject and then tossing it aside...

I suppose I could have done worse as far as non-baseball autos go.  Olney is a guy whose opinion I at least used to respect.  I don't really want his autograph though... This Val Kilmer guy.  Well, I recognize him.  Does that count for something???  I know he's in a bunch of movies I've never seen before.  I'm pretty sure he was a late 90's guy which would've put me at the age of 8 or so.  Probably just a bit before my time...

...and yes, our promised RIP card.  I was definitely happy when I saw this guy was featured.  Numbered out of 25 is also usually quite good for these (though I'm not sure about this year yet).  It seems that since production is up this year, we won't see many (if any...) cases with two RIP cards like we did last year.  Oh well.

Anywho.  That be it for my case this year.  We got some cool stuff that I'm happy with and some okay cards that anyone is more than welcome to try and pick up from me.  Gint-A-Cuffs has just started so I'll have to get on scoring that box (I've already opened it and updated my wants/haves with what I got).

Also, I realize that I have 6 contests that need winners!!!  Don't worry!  I haven't forgotten!  In fact, I've already written up and completed the post in which I'm announcing the winners, so hold on tight.  Maybe I'll e-mail the winners later today to get the ball rolling as far as prizes go, but no promises!

Case Review Part 3: Minis!

Again, we'll start off with the "slightly less silly than yesterday" 10th anniversary buybacks.  These are only slightly less silly simply because they're framed.  Frames make them feel special.  I feel I'm being duped...

There's some cool ones in there including two Lords of Olympus inserts, but the only one I plan on keeping is that Shelby Miller RC.  I was more than happy with that one.

I can already tell that this post is going to be obnoxiously long today simply by the number of scans I have set aside for it, so I'm going to try to be a bit more concise than I normally am.

We'll start with some of the better minis I pulled.  I opened up the one pack of 5 red minis and regretted doing it.  There's really not much there as far as stars, and the Magna Carta might be my least favorite inanimate object gracing Allen & Ginter this year.  I suppose Todd Frazier is having an above average year...

We also somehow pulled 3 NNO minis (usually limited to 50) and 2 A&G Flag Back minis /25.  This is quite a bit above average from what I've seen, but I also didn't pull any other type of mini (cloth, wood, metal, ect) so overall I was slightly disappointed.  I do realize that I now own a fairly low numbered Trout card (6/25) which is beyond awesome, but I'll probably need to sell it to recoup some losses.  It probably ended up being the best card I pulled from the case aside from perhaps the rip card.

The case I broke had no problems with missing or doubled up minis in its packs so I ended up with exactly 288.  Here's the breakdown I received (plus the 5 rarer minis above):

A&G Back: 61 (4 SP)
Black: 29 (2 SP)
Regular back Minis: 133 (7 doubles) (21 SP)
Mini Inserts: 59 (5 doubles)

The one black bordered mini of interest I pulled was of Mr. Kris Bryant!  That was quite exciting when he came sliding out of the pack.  I also managed to pick up 3 mini insert case hits instead of the usual 2 which was possibly even more exciting as I'll be actively pursuing these two sets and the minis can go for up to $10 a pop!

The rest is mostly going to be pictures... mini inserts.  I'll give you one from each set so you can be judgmental.  I will probably make snide comments about a couple of them in the meantime.

They made a Blackbeard card.  Enough said.

I chose this guy because my sister went to college at PBA (Palm Beach Atlantic) and the Flagler mansion/museum is quite literally right across the street from where she lived... except imagine the street as being a small waterway or inlet type thing instead of an actual street.

This set is awesome.  Gather all the pranksters and put them together.  Sounds like my life.

I would've featured the red-tailed hawk because I see them all the time where I live, but I think I might have already featured that card on this blog at one point.

This card is miscut, but it got chosen for the card back and for having the most entertaining blurb of an otherwise bore-some blurby set.

I think I'm looking forward to completing this set the most out of any of these.  Mostly because Nachos Grande seems to be pulling all the cards from this set that I haven't seen yet and I really like them.  Butterfly, honeybee, praying mantis, ladybug, even the assassin bug is cool.  Meanwhile, I got stuck with the likes of the Death's Head Hawkmoth, the Deer Tick, the Goliath Beetle, and the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach.

Case Review Part 2: Full Sized Inserts

This year Allen & Ginter issued stamped parallels alongside their normal base cards.  From what I experienced, they could've been from any/all years (the only year I didn't get a buyback from was 2006... go figure).  I wasn't a huge fan of these cards in general mostly because I have no idea how they decided to do this stamping.  Were there set numbers of individual cards stamped?  Or did Topps just take a ginormous pile of base cards sitting on their shelf and stamp them randomly with no regard for the given card.  The fact that I got no 2006 buybacks seems to suggest the later...

Either way, I got the cards.  They came 2 in every box without fail and I figured I'd scan them all for you so you can see what I got.  In my opinion, the only design the stamp doesn't completely ruin is the 2009 design (and this year's, but we're about to get there), so I'd probably say the Santana or Cabrera is my favorite of these.

Topps also stamped base cards from this year's set as well.  However, finding one of these was much more rare (not even 1 per case), and they were numbered out of 10.  Though the strange parallel still isn't anything I particularly enjoy, I will at least accept these for what they are... low numbered value.  I happened to pull a Ryan Braun numbered 2/10 which somewhat made me cringe.

The REAL full sized inserts that Allen & Ginter offers every year normally feature small sets (typically 20 or fewer cards) that usually fail to relate to sports in any way at all.  To me, this is awesome.  In fact, I like it so much that I have a whole post series dedicated to reviewing these insert sets!

This year, Allen & Ginter offered 5 new full sized insert sets (including a 6th found only in retail).  I was able to complete all 5 of these within my one case.  Here's how many cards I pulled of each set (along with my favorite card from each):

Great Scott: 22

Ancient Armory: 37

What Once Was Believed: 19

Menagerie of the Mind: 40

What Once Would Be: 22

I'm not going to say much about these sets individually as I'll cover them more when I get around to reviewing them, but there's two things I want to say now.
  1. These full sized inserts are a far cry from those of the last 3 years.  I find them, as a whole, to be extremely bland.  While I will say that every single card I posted I enjoy immensely, it just seemed like every good card had 3 or 4 terrible ones right after it.  The Great Scott! set in particular was beyond boring to me... and I love physics... FEAR NOT!  The minis this year more than make up for this nonsense.
  2. This last set I posted, the "What Once Would Be" annoyed me to no end.  I don't mind when pictures and/or player cards are oriented in different fashions.  These two card fronts are properly oriented given the picture they used.  What bugs me is the following:

Please... don't orient the card backs differently as well.  This feels terribly unorganized and completely inconsistent.  In fact, there are other insert sets that have varying fronts, yet still have consistent backs within this product.  I don't get it... and this one can't be blamed on the Ginter Code.

OH!  Bonus card!  This didn't come from my case though.  I cheated and got a bit of retail.

Keys to the City: 0 :(

Of the 4 of these I've obtained so far, they've all been stunning cards and I like them quite a bit.  These 6 missing cards are the only 6 full sized cards I'm missing from my entire want list (which is up now btw... check it out!).
